C Street Closure!!

Crews working for Sound Transit will close South C Street from South 25th Street to South Tacoma Way beginning next Monday, Jan. 23, for roadway and street improvements. The closure is expected to last until April. Cars will be detoured up South 25th Street to Jefferson Avenue/Center Street in order to get onto South Tacoma Way. Signage will be placed to detour traffic. Pedestrians will be able to access South Tacoma Way via South C Street through a dedicated pedestrian path.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but in the long run these improvements are for the better for our community. If your donations consist of clothing or small household items, our Adams Campus will accept these donations on Thursdays from 2-4 and Saturdays from 1-4.  You help us make the differences for those in need!

Out with the old and in with the new?

Before you discard the old, why not take some time to see if that “something old” is something someone can still use? Do you have clothes that don’t fit? Are you taking a step of faith and expecting your current clothes to be too big soon? Do you have extra blankets? Too many shoes? Too many coats? Canned foods that are sitting around unused? Too many cars? Donating to the Mission is a great way of making space for new things in your home or business, not to mention, you’ll help meet someone’s needs. Not all of us are able to donate money but many of us have extra things, extra clothing, extra food (that can of beans you know you will never use) that we can probably do without. Donate it to the Mission and help us clothe, feed, and give hope to others.

Our need for winter weather clothing.

Once again, It's getting cold outside and here at the Rescue Mission we are in desperate need of warm related clothing. things such as: hats, blankets, coats/jackets, gloves, etc. These things are essential in keeping warm. So, if you have any thing to contribute that might be too small, outdated, or simply just want to donate, feel free to bring them down to our donation center at our Downtown campus or Adams St. campus. We are also in need of baby/toddler clothing, hygiene items(deodorant, razors, shampoo & conditioner, and soap). These things go very quickly! So when you are cleaning out your dressers and closets please keep the Rescue Mission in mind. Thank You in advance.

Also, there are some things that we do not accept as donations at the Rescue Mission Warehouse:

Anything broken or incomplete

Blinds

Electric blankets

Hide-a-beds

Holiday décor

Used toys

Non-working appliances

Paint

Stained, ripped, or dirty clothes

Used toiletries

Large furniture and beds (please donate these to our partner organization the Northwest Furniture Bank, ask us for directions and any more info or visit their website www.nwfurniturebank.org)

New Clothing Room Open

Thanks to the help of many volunteers, interns, and staff, the clothing has moved and is ready to serve those in need. The clothing room in now in the Need-A-Break warehouse and will be open simultaneously during the hospitality hours which are Monday-Thursday from 1-4pm. Mens, Womens, and Children’s clothing are all available to the clients of the Rescue Mission and to the Public.

Do remember that all clothing donations the Mission receives gets plugged in right away to the clothing room for the clients. When the clothing is unusable, or is something the clients wouldn’t benefit from, we have a partnership with Value Village which pays the Mission for the abundance of cloth. From this partnership, the Mission is able to help fund programming and continue the mission of life transformation.

If you are interested in volunteering with the clothing room, please fill out a volunteer form at: http://www.rescue-mission.org/volunteer-application?box_number=2. If you have any questions about the clothing room or would like to learn more, feel free to comment below.

Summer Update for Need-A-Break

Let the Sun Shine on Everyone’s Lives!!

Hopefully everybody is enjoying their summer!   Here at The Rescue Mission we are busy!  In our hospitality area we are reorganizing everything so that the clothing room currently located in the emergency services area will now be located in the donation warehouse starting mid-August! This is so exciting because we will now be able to offer men’s, women’s, AND children’s clothes four days a week! (Currently only offering men’s and women’s clothing on mon. and weds.)  So please think of us when cleaning out those closets and dressers before going school clothes shopping for the kiddos.describe the image

We want everybody to know just what a difference you make in other people’s lives when you take the time to volunteer or donate items to The Rescue Mission. Without you we wouldn’t be able to help others. Thank you!

Some of the things we are in real need of right now would be men’s deodorant (small trial size is best), diapers (all sizes), razors (men’s and women’s), shampoo and conditioner, and soap.  Basically essential toiletry items are always in great demand here.  Also, school is about to start again and school supplies are a very welcome donation.

Thank you for everything that you do!

Need-A-Break Updates!

School’s almost out and summer is upon us! Time for sunshine, smiles, and laughter!  You are vital to helping bring that to many here in our community.  There has been a time in everyone’s  life when they could use the help of another; something as simple as an ear willing to listen, to lend a hand with a project, or just to know that you are there for them.  The Rescue Mission is that ear, hand, and place that cares for so many in our community.  With your help, you can be that too.

By giving your time with volunteering, your donations of clothes, food, or household items, you can make a difference to so many in need.  Currently, there are donation needs for towels, backpacks, all sizes of baby diapers, and school supplies.  And clothes, always clothes!  Summer clothes would be great; everybody likes to wear shorts when the sun is shining!  So when you’re cleaning out those closets or making room in your children’s dresser for new school clothes, what a great way to teach your kids that helping others is the greatest feeling!  Not everyone has the same privileges they do and by donating the things they don’t need anymore, they could be putting a smile on someone else’s face.

Here in the Need a Break Program we have a new intern, Me!  My name is Cheryl and I just want to tell all of you how lucky and blessed I feel to be working with this organization.  The things we do here for so many people is truly amazing.  The positive and encouraging environment that they approach everything with has helped even me.  I hope you take the opportunity to take a minute to check us out and help another who really needs you.

Alternative Donation Drop Off

Construction, it is such a pain, and it feels as though it is everywhere. As you may or may not know, due to the Sound Transit construction going on at the Downtown Tacoma Campus, it has made it a little more difficult to come down to the warehouse to donate. Therefore, we have come up with a Plan B. If you find it too difficult to come drop off donations at the downtown location, the Adam’s Family Campus, located at 2909 S Adams St, will be accepting donations two days a week on Thursdays from 2-4 pm and Saturdays from 1-4 pm.

The Adam’s Family Campus will be accepting clothing, toiletries, and small household items. You may enter through the main building double doors and ask the front desk to accept the donation and issue a receipt. If you are going to take advantage of this opportunity, please only come during the designated time slots. If those times do not work for you, the Downtown Tacoma Campus Warehouse continues to accept donations Monday-Friday from 9am-4 pm and Saturdays from 9am-1 pm.  Remember your donations are key in helping the Mission to be successful.

Hams, Yams, and Easter Baskets

Easter Sunday is fast approaching and we want to be able to provide a yummy festive meal at our downtown campus but we need your help supplying some of the food. Some food items that will be prepared include hams, turkeys, potatoes, green beans, vegetables, yams, and desserts such as pies. All food item donations can be dropped off at the downtown campus kitchen. Also, in addition to food, we want to make the day special for the kids and have fun things like Easter baskets filled with school supplies, art supplies, toiletries, and other various little things.  Or simply just the items that go in the baskets are great! To help make all this possible we need your help. So please, the next time you are at the grocery store or when you go to do your shopping for your Easter meal, grab an extra ham, can of green beans or pumpkin/apple pie for example, and bring it down to the kitchen. If you are crafty, put together a basket or two for one of the kids or just bring in supplies to go into the baskets and we can figure out the rest. Anything and everything is appreciated.
Actual easter pic resized 600
On a more serious note, traditionally within Western commercialized culture, when one thinks about Easter they may think about egg hunts, chocolate bunnies and eggs, dying Easter eggs, floral patterns, greeting cards, family brunches, dinners, and good times. While that is all in good fun and appropriate, I would say that some people often look past or forget what Easter is really about. On Easter Sunday, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated. According to Scripture, Jesus rose from the dead three days after his death on the cross. The Friday before Easter Sunday, known as Good Friday, marks his crucifixion. It is said that through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the ultimate penalty for sin. It is through His obedience to His Father and His willing sacrifice that we are redeemed, He has paid the price for our sins.

Easter is about so much more than egg hunts and chocolate bunnies and that should always be kept in mind. Imagine the kind of hypothetical rebirth/resurrection that you can give someone through donating to the Need-A-Break program and in a way giving them a second chance at life. Someone who may be down on their luck and in need may come to the donation warehouse and be able to get all the things they need to get themselves back on their feet.

Never Too Early for Spring Cleaning

Although some might say this is wishful thinking, the days are getting slightly longer and I like to believe that the temperature is getting slightly warmer as well.  As we slowly enter into this new season, many find it necessary to begin the “spring cleaning” and downsize what no longer has a need.  Maybe you have some old clothes, household items that have been replaced, or some shoes that nobody wears anymore which you are looking to get rid of.  Before you try and get these things out as quick as you can, please ask yourself if somebody else could be blessed by them.  If the answer is yes, bring them down to the Rescue Mission warehouse and let us do the rest by getting them plugged into where they’re needed most.   We accept all clothing and ask that other donations be in decent condition.  The warehouse is located at 425 South Tacoma Way and is accepting donations M-F 9am-4pm and Sat 9am-1pm with volunteers standing by to assist you with your donations and issue receipts.  If you have any doubts on whether or not the Rescue Mission could use your donations don’t hesitate to call and ask: 253-284-4282. Our current needs are men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes of any size, feminine hygiene products, household items that are in good condition, and small electronics like radios and clocks.  It’s never too early to start the spring cleaning! dirty laundry
