The Rescue Mission Vennie Murphy 5K Walk-A-Thon

describe the image

The Rescue Mission team is excited to invite you to our first ever walk-a-thon to support the Mission.

Join us to take part in a fun, healthy day for the whole family. Highlights will include live entertainment, tasty treats, and activities for kids, as well as an interactive activity designed to teach participants about the experience of Pierce County’s homeless population.

The walk-a-thon borrows the name of Vennie Murphy, a retired Boeing IAM – 751 Machinist, who has volunteered at the Mission since the ‘90s. In 2012, Vennie was honored as a Rescue Mission Volunteer of the Year. Vennie’s continued dedication to serving in the Good Neighbor Café has contributed to warm meals, and warm hearts, for two decades.

The Walk-A-Thon will raise financial support for The Rescue Mission’s ongoing work of providing food, shelter, and other vital services to Pierce County’s homeless population, while celebrating our dedicated volunteers, like Vennie Murphy.

• When - Saturday, April 6th - 9am to 2pm

• Where - Federal Way High School, Federal Way, WA

• What's Next? - Visit our Walk-A-Thon event page to learn more and register to walk! You can use the Friends Asking Friends site to register as an individual, or build a team and gather your friends and family to support the Mission together. Anyone can contribute financially, with no obligation to walk or be present the day of the event.

Rescue Mission Coffee Events This Week

Rescue Mission EventThe technology age is great.  With little effort you can stay in touch, follow and encourage your favorite cause, communicate with your supporters, send out updates, create and watch video content and more.  But one thing you can’t do over the internet: MEET FACE TO FACE.

That’s why each summer we schedule a series of coffee events around Pierce County for Rescue Mission supporters to gather and get to know me and each other.  It’s brief, no more than an hour, and fun.

Here’s the Schedule for the week.  If you’re in the area drop on in, even for  a few minutes to say “HI”.

Monday July 12th: Bonney Lake Starbucks (next to Walmart) at 1PM  Sumner Starbucks (main & valley) 2:30pm

Tuesday July 13th: Lakewood Starbucks (100 St)  1pm, Black Bear Yogurt (Steilacoom Blvd) 2pm

Wednesday July 14th: Puyallup, Downtown Forza 1pm, Starbucks at Canyon Crossings 2:30pm

Thursday July 15th: Gig Harbor. Starbucks North (near Target and Home Depot) 1pm and Cutters Point Uptown at 2:30pm

Friday July 16th: University Place Forza at 11am, Mandolin Cafe on 12th in Tacoma at 1pm and Cutters Point UWT at 2:30pm.

I look forward to meeting with you and getting to know you better.

Alumni Pizza Party

Rescua Mission

Friday, April 9th, 2010, we are having our spring NEW LIFE PROGRAM graduation!  It’s always a huge highlight for the staff and supporters of the Rescue Mission.  It allows us to see the transformations that are taking place in the lives of those we love and serve.  I encourage everyone to attend.

The graduation is taking place at Trinity Church 4041 Tacoma Mall Blvd. at 7pm.

This spring I’m also hosting a special pre-graduation pizza party for ALUMNI OF THE NEW LIFE PROGRAM at the ADRIATIC GRILL, also on Tacoma Mall Blvd. – essentially across street from the church.  All Alumni are invited to join me at 5:30pm, (the pizza is free) and spend an hour getting reconnected and catching up on all that God is doing in your life.  We are willing to provide transportation to those Alumni who are not driving.

Please RSVP to Marlene Hamilton, Alumni Director, at Marleneh@trm.org or call 253-383-4493.  (If you don’t let me know you’re coming I won’t know how much pizza to order.)

Look forward to seeing you there.

Fundraising to the Rich is Wrong! (is it?)

My faith tells me that God loves all equally and cares for all without regard to material or societal worth.  He cared for those who were shunned for their past mistakes and restored their futures.  He loves the poor and broken hearted and reminded us to not show favoritism to the ric.  Yet we as a people continue to contextualize these ideas and dumb them down for our own humanly purposes.

For example, professional fundraising techniques will tell you to focus exclusively on those who have capacity to give, to focus on the rich, and slather them with attention.  Yet God has told us directly in scripture not to treat the rich with special favor.

The answer is LOVE!  Love all as Christ loved and challenge the established principles of fundraising by setting one dominate value: To share your love and enthusiasm with ALL those who have expressed an interest and demonstrated a capacity to love and care for the poor – not just those who are rich. Many with resources do love the poor and have demonstrated a concern for others.  In the same way, many who don’t have much will also show a concern for others who have even less than they do. Is one better than another because they have greater capacity? Certainly not!

I will NOT show favoritism to any man because of his wealth, neither will I look poorly on someone because of their current lack of financial resources.  I will trust that if I act in obedience, God will provide.

But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted every perish.  Psalm 9:18

Certainly some leaders must disagree with me, let me know what you think.

TRM Charity Golf Tournament (to benefit homeless children)

The Golf Committee of the TRM board approved a switch from our annual golfathon to a golf tournament today at our monthly golf committee breakfast.  This won’t be your regular, run of the mill tournament, but will be held at the new Chambers Bay golf course this July.  While the date is still in the works, the committee settled on this arrangement after a lot of discussion.  TRM has had a golfathon for 15 years and deciding to make the switch wasn’t easy.  The factors considered were the following:  More golfers could be involved in a tournment since the golfathon format limits many people who are not enthusiastic about fundraising.  The Chambers Bay course allows us the opportunity to have a one of a kind charity tournament in this area.   And lastly we hope we will be able to raise tens thousands of dollars to benefit Adams Square, our new project designed to serve homeless children.  As I get more information I will pass it on.  let me know what you think.   DC
